If you’re reading this as an NQT and looking for your first role, congratulations on becoming qualified. We’ve put together an NQT guide to help get you started. After the months of toil and hard work, you’re ready to get into the classroom and begin your teaching career. What’s more, we’re here to help you every step of the way. In this blog, we offer a range useful tips on how to find your first teaching job.

How to land your first teaching job

The likelihood is that you’re now looking for your first teaching job. Whether that’s permanent, contract or supply, there are numerous options available. So, what activities will give you the best shot at finding your first role?

Attend recruitment fairs

Attending recruitment fairs is important. These events are usually held at universities and are attended by recruitment agencies and careers service organisations. By attending these events you will get a greater understanding of when schools start their recruitment drives and what the best approach is to take to find a job. Furthermore, these events are packed with people who have contacts with local schools who can help place you, like us, Connex!

Use a good consultant

Sorry about this one, but we had to promote ourselves a little didn’t we!? A good recruitment consultant will have been working in the industry for many years and will have strong links with local schools. What’s more, they will understand the culture and ethos of schools and be able to match that with the type of school you want to find a job in. For a confidential chat about finding your first teaching job, contact us today.

Apply through different channels

Teaching roles are advertised in a variety of ways. While some schools will advertise directly, others will use job boards such as Indeed. Some schools will only use their preferred recruitment agencies. It’s important therefore that you’re covering the bases, after all, it’s a competitive landscape out there. By doing this, you’re going to give yourself the best shot.

Use teacher resources

There are a plethora of teaching resources available which offer advice and support such as twinkl.co.uk which, when the time comes to carrying out an interview, can help with the creation of a lesson plan. Our blog is also a great resource full of useful advice, go and check it out today.

In part two of this NQT guide, we look at personal statements, practicing with family, interview tips and what to do about references.
