“My name is Lilian Thorley. I am an English tutor. I started with Connex Tuition as an NTP tutor. Like many teachers after the pandemic, I thought I could use my skills to help bridge the gaps for those pupils that had been severely impacted by periods of absence from school.”

What are the best parts of your job as a tutor?
The best parts of the job are that working on a one-to-one basis means I get to know individual pupils quite well, and there are opportunities to create tailor-made lessons to suit a particular individual. It is easier to create a non-threatening environment that does not overwhelm pupils

What are the young people you tutor like? How are you positively impacting them?
I have worked with, and continue to work with pupils who, for different reasons, cannot attend mainstream school. I am currently working with a year 11 autistic pupil who is working towards GCSE English language and literature. I enjoy sharing my knowledge of English and can use some of my additional training in autism awareness and trauma. It is great knowing that a pupil’s confidence is increasing!

Would you recommend tutoring and Connex Tutors to others?
I would recommend working with Connex Tutors because I have received appropriate and timely support from co-ordinators. Their standards are high which attracted me in the first place and there is a great range of CPD courses that can be accessed online.
