Tell us a bit about yourself?

“I’m Sam, and I am a qualified teacher in KS2/3. I have taught children from nursery through to Y11 over 24 years.

From being very young, I always wanted to be a teacher. My mum was a teacher so I had first hand experience from when I would accompany her in to school, when I had training days at my school or free periods later on in my school life. I always went on school trips during holiday time to places such as France, Holland, Spain with her and groups of children.

I was lucky to experience time outside the school hours, so I could see it wasn’t all about dashing from classroom to classroom, you could really get to see the children in a different light. “

Sam’s commitment to her students has been recognised with the Professional Tutor Quality Mark, this is designed to highlight those colleagues who demonstrate the highest standard of practice and show dedication to their pupils and schools.

Why does tutoring with Connex suit you?

After qualifying as a teacher, I spent seven years teaching a Year 5 class. Once I had my two children, I sought casual work to fit around family life, including supply teaching, 11+ tuition, exam invigilating, and teaching maths and English from KS1 to GCSE to SEN and AP students. During this time, I developed a genuine passion for teaching SEN and AP children, both in person and remotely.

What are the best parts of your job as a tutor?

My experience with flexible working led me to seek a remote role where I could continue teaching SEN and AP children. That’s when I discovered Connex! Working for Connex during school hours allows me to take my own children to and from school while also maximizing time with my family.

““It’s the perfect work life balance working for Connex” “

What are the young people you tutor like? How are you positively impacting them?

Currently, I teach a Year 10 boy who is working at a Year 2 level. He is mute, which presents a unique challenge in ensuring I prepare the right materials for him. With his short attention span, I keep activities brief and engaging to help him stay on task. I also teach a Year 11 student who has been out of education for over three years.

He’s a real character, and I enjoy our chats—of course, while we’re working! He’s currently focused on Functional Skills in maths and English. We go through past papers, and then explore specific areas where he struggles. With both students, I can see their progress, which fills me with joy.

What does being awarded the Professional Tutor Quality Mark from Connex Tutors mean to you?

I’m honoured at being awarded the Professional Quality Tutor Mark from Connex. I honestly just feel humble and pride for being recognised for just doing a job I love.

Would you recommend tutoring and Connex Tutors to others?

I would certainly recommend Connex to anyone who is looking for a flexible job. Although I am work entirely remotely, I have also been offered jobs in schools, so there are so many roles available for those looking for work. There is some amazing support and courses available for everyone. All in all, it’s the perfect work life balance working for Connex.
