Tell us a bit about yourself?

“I have been a class teacher for 29 years, having taught in inner city London schools for the majority of that time. I had wanted to come out of the classroom but still stay in teaching for a while, so when my daughter went to university, I thought the time was right for a change.“
Juliette’s commitment to her students has been recognised with the Professional Tutor Quality Mark, which is designed to highlight those colleagues who demonstrate the highest standard of practice and show dedication to their pupils and schools.
Why does tutoring with Connex suit you?
What appealed to me most about tutoring was, ironically, one of the things that used to frustrate me as a class teacher – not being able to personalise every lesson for each pupil, or follow through with the teaching until they felt secure and confident with the learning objectives.
Tutoring with Connex allows me to do exactly that. I know my professionalism and expertise are trusted, and that both Connex and I want the absolute best educational experience for each child.
It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach, lessons are tailored to suit each pupil’s skills, interests, and challenges.
Working for Connex means I actually get to teach the children, rather than being pulled away by all the additional demands that can take you away from the pupils in a traditional classroom setting.
What are the best parts of your job as a tutor?
I really enjoy all parts of my job, but the best part is working with the families of the children I teach and seeing what a positive impact of a child enjoying their learning and being in education has on the whole family. A child not being in school has a detrimental effect on the whole family, so seeing the positive outcomes of a child attending lessons, participating and making progress is something that benefits the whole family.
“Lessons are tailored to suit each pupil’s skills, interests, and challenges.”
What are the young people you tutor like? How are you positively impacting them?
I am currently teaching pupils in Years 8, 9 and 10 – some in person, and some online. They all have significant gaps in their English and Mathematics skills due to prolonged periods of absence from school.
They have a variety of needs, but it is predominantly their social and emotional challenges that prevent them from attending school. Their anxiety around the school environment is overwhelming, so a key focus is to cover as much of the missed curriculum as possible. However, the main aim is to build their confidence and help them see themselves as capable learners who can achieve well.
For so long, the children I teach have felt unable to access the curriculum. By personalising lessons and drawing on their individual strengths, they are now able to achieve and succeed in every session.
I provide feedback to both the pupils and their parents at the end of every lesson, ensuring their hard work is recognised and that they are aware of the progress they’re making.
What does being awarded the Professional Tutor Quality Mark from Connex Tutors mean to you?
Being awarded the Professional Tutor Quality Mark from Connex Tutors has been great. It means a lot to be recognised for the hours and hard work with the pupils I teach. I have the certificate on my mantelpiece!
Would you recommend tutoring and Connex Tutors to others?
I would recommend tutoring with Connex Tutors to other teachers because the support and communication from the agency is excellent. There is paperwork of course, but it is weekly lesson reports and termly reports for the borough of the pupil I am teaching, not laborious administration that does not benefit the pupil. This gives me time to prepare lessons and get resources ready for each of my upcoming lessons, so they are organised and tailored to each individual pupil. Connex Tutors have a Quality Assurance process that takes places yearly, which is a helpful process to self evaluate my teaching with an assessor and address any professional development I feel I need. I feel supported by the agency at all times, as well as feeling trusted as a professional to deliver lessons well and work with my pupils to ensure they get the most out of their tutoring sessions.
