About the Role
Connex Education is working in partnership with a well-regarded special school in Barking and Dagenham to recruit a British Sign Language (BSL) Specialist SEND Teaching Assistant for a full-time, long-term role.
The school caters for pupils aged 4–16 with a wide range of complex learning needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), and hearing impairments. As a BSL-trained Teaching Assistant, you will support pupils who use BSL to communicate and may have additional sensory or learning needs.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils who use British Sign Language as their primary method of communication.
- Assist with the delivery of lessons and structured activities using BSL and visual communication strategies.
- Support pupils with hearing impairments as well as other learning needs such as ASD or PMLD.
- Contribute to the implementation of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and individual learning plans.
- Promote an inclusive, safe, and encouraging learning environment.
- Work closely with teachers, therapists, and the SENCO to deliver consistent, effective support.
Assignment Details
- Full-time role, Monday to Friday
- Working hours: 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM
- Long-term assignment with the potential for ongoing or permanent work
Person Specification
- BSL qualification (minimum Level 2) – essential
- Experience supporting pupils with hearing impairments and complex SEND
- Ability to adapt communication and support strategies to meet a wide range of needs
- A calm, patient, and empathetic approach
- A current DBS on the update service or willingness to apply for one through Connex
