PMLD Tutor with Makaton & PECS Experience
Connex Education is recruiting for a Qualified Teacher to work on a one-to-one basis with a primary-aged student with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who is currently not attending school.
This flexible tutoring role gives you the freedom to manage your own timetable while working outside a traditional classroom — offering a rewarding opportunity to make a visible difference to a child’s progress, confidence, and wellbeing.
About the Role:
Tuition will take place in the student’s home and requires a highly personalised, play-based approach to encourage engagement and develop key life and learning skills. The student is non-verbal, with significant speech and language developmental delay, so experience and confidence using PECS, Makaton, and alternative communication methods is essential.
Sessions should be sensory and interactive, using objects of reference, symbols, pictures, and a now/next board to help the student understand routines and build communication skills.
We’re looking for a tutor who can create a calm, nurturing, and consistent environment, and who can adapt their teaching creatively to keep learning meaningful and enjoyable.

Role Requirements:
✅ QTS / QTLS or equivalent teaching qualification
✅ Experience supporting students with PMLD and Autism
✅ Confident using PECS, Makaton, and alternative communication strategies
✅ Skilled in delivering sensory-based, play-led learning sessions
✅ Patient, resilient, and adaptable
✅ Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
Full driving licence (preferred but not essential)
Start date: September 2025 | End date: End of Academic Year
