SEND Teaching Assistant – Year 2

Location: Walthamstow, E17

Pay: £95.83 per day (pay review after 12 weeks)

Start Date: October Half Term (Subject to DBS and clearance)

Assignment Details

  • Full-time role, Monday to Friday (Term Time Only)
  • Working hours: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Long-term role for the full academic year
  • Supporting a Year 2 class, working with pupils with ASD and complex needs
  • Combination of 1:1 and small group support within a mainstream classroom

About the Role

Connex Education is working on behalf of a large and inclusive mainstream primary school in Waltham Forest to recruit a SEND Learning Support Assistant (LSA) to join the team from October half term.

This full-time role is based in a Year 2 class, supporting pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and complex needs. The successful candidate will provide tailored support to help children access learning, build communication and social skills, and manage emotional regulation within a positive and structured environment.

The role may also involve assisting with personal care, including toileting or feeding, so applicants must be willing to support pupils with these needs when required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with ASD and complex needs in the Year 2 classroom
  • Support engagement in learning through visuals, routines, and personalised strategies
  • Encourage communication, social interaction, and emotional regulation
  • Use de-escalation techniques to manage challenging behaviour calmly and effectively
  • Collaborate with the class teacher and SENCO to deliver EHCP and individual targets
  • Contribute to daily observations and progress records to support ongoing assessment

Person Specification

  • Experience supporting children with SEND (ASD and complex needs) in schools, care, or similar settings
  • Confidence in managing challenging behaviour and applying de-escalation techniques
  • Calm, patient, and nurturing approach to learning and behaviour support
  • Ability to build strong relationships with pupils, staff, and families
  • Willingness to assist with personal care tasks when required
  • A current DBS on the update service or willingness to apply for one through Connex
