About the Role
Connex Education is working in partnership with a large, inclusive mainstream primary school in Waltham Forest to recruit a Learning Support Assistant (LSA) to support Reception pupils with SEND needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), speech and language delays, and developmental delays. This role begins in December or January and is ideal for someone with a nurturing, patient approach who is passionate about supporting young children at an early stage of their learning journey. You will play a key role in helping pupils access early learning experiences, develop communication and social interaction skills, and build independence and confidence.
Key Responsibilities
- Support pupils’ access to EYFS curriculum learning through play-based and sensory approaches.
- Provide 1:1 and small-group interventions tailored to individual learning and development needs.
- Adapt resources and activities using visuals, simplified modelling, routine structures and sensory tools.
- Support emotional regulation, behaviour, and transitions between indoor/outdoor and activity changes.
- Implement SEND strategies advised by SEN professionals such as Speech & Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, or Educational Psychologists.
- Use communication supports including visuals, PECs, Makaton, gestures, or objects of reference where appropriate.
- Encourage independence with early personal skills including self-care, turn-taking, sharing, tidy-up routines, and following instructions.
- Work closely with class teachers and SENCO to meet EHCP goals and track progress.
- Communicate observations and progress clearly and professionally with staff and parents, as directed.
Person Specification
- Good standard of literacy and numeracy (GCSE English & Maths or equivalent)
- Experience of working with young children (essential)
- Experience supporting children with SEND (desirable but training provided)
- Knowledge of early childhood development and play-based learning
- Kind, calm, patient and child-centred approach
- Ability to use positive behaviour and emotional regulation strategies
- A current DBS on the update service, or willingness to apply via Connex
