Complex Needs & PMLD Teaching Assistant

Salary: £100 – £120 per day (dependent on experience and assignment)

Connex Education is working with a number of specialist SEND schools across North Somerset, seeking compassionate and dedicated PMLD Teaching Assistants to support pupils with Complex Learning Difficulties and Disabilities (CLDD), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) and Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD).
These rewarding opportunities are available across specialist schools supporting pupils aged 3 to 19 years. You’ll work as part of experienced multidisciplinary teams, helping children and young people access an individualised curriculum within safe, nurturing and highly supportive learning environments.

About the Role
As a PMLD Teaching Assistant, you will:
- Support pupils with profound, multiple and complex learning needs both inside and outside the classroom.
- Assist with personalised learning activities designed to promote communication, independence and engagement.
- Be confident providing personal care, including toileting, changing and supporting with intimate care, while always maintaining pupils’ dignity and wellbeing.
- Support pupils during therapy sessions, sensory activities and specialist interventions.
- Work closely with teachers, therapists, nurses and other professionals to deliver holistic support.
- Use a range of communication strategies, including PECS, Makaton and visual resources, to encourage participation and interaction.
- Support early communication, literacy and phonics development where appropriate.
- Promote a calm, safe and inclusive environment where every pupil can thrive.
About You
We’re looking for individuals who:
- Have experience supporting children or young people with PMLD, SLD, complex needs or SEND, either in education, care or support settings.
- Are comfortable and confident providing personal care and toileting support.
- Are patient, compassionate and resilient, with a genuine passion for supporting pupils with complex needs.
- Have excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Have experience using PECS, Makaton or structured phonics programmes, or are willing to develop these skills.
- Hold medical training, PEG feeding experience or other relevant healthcare qualifications (desirable but not essential, as training may be available).
- Are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
