Complex Needs Tutor – Empower Communication & Connection Every Day
Location: Various across [Region]
Start date: Immediate | Ongoing throughout the academic year
Contract type: Flexible – Part-Time or Full-Time
Salary: Competitive, based on experience

Connex Education is on the lookout for passionate and experienced Complex Needs Tutors to support learners with a range of learning difficulties, communication needs, and disabilities who are currently unable to attend mainstream settings.

This is a powerful and purposeful role, supporting children and young people through bespoke 1:1 or small group sessions. You’ll be a consistent, trusted adult using tools like Makaton and PECS to unlock communication, confidence, and joy in learning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver personalised, engaging lessons for learners with complex needs, including ASD, SLD, PMLD, and communication challenges.

  • Use Makaton and PECS effectively to support expressive and receptive communication.

  • Work closely with families, SENCOs, therapists, and other professionals to ensure a joined-up approach.

  • Adapt your approach using sensory, visual, and kinaesthetic resources to meet each student’s learning style.

  • Focus on EHCP-led outcomes including communication, social interaction, emotional regulation, and life skills.

  • Provide nurturing emotional and behavioural support to build trust, calm, and a safe space for learning.

  • Maintain progress notes, session logs, and communication reports as part of the wider support team.

  • Uphold safeguarding, inclusion, and dignity in every aspect of your practice.

What We’re Looking For

  • QTS, QTLS, HLTA status or significant experience as a SEND tutor or learning mentor.

  • Proficient in Makaton and PECS—able to embed these into every session with confidence.

  • A strong understanding of ASD, SLD, SEMH, sensory processing, and attachment needs.

  • Creative, caring, and flexible—you can adapt to the needs of the moment and the learner.

  • Experience working 1:1 or with small groups outside mainstream education is highly desirable.

  • Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply).

  • Own transport preferred, but not essential.
