Makaton Tutor – Empower Communication & Connection Every Day

Location: Various across Birmingham
Start Date: Immediate | Ongoing throughout the academic year
Contract Type: Flexible – Part-Time or Full-Time
Salary: Competitive, based on experience

Are you fluent in Makaton and passionate about making communication accessible for every learner? Connex Education is seeking skilled and compassionate Makaton Tutors to support children and young people with complex needs who are currently unable to access mainstream education.

In this deeply rewarding role, you’ll deliver 1:1 or small group sessions that go beyond education—you’ll be building bridges to connection, confidence, and joy through every sign and symbol.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver personalised, engaging sessions for learners with complex needs, including ASD, SLD, PMLD, and other communication challenges.

  • Use Makaton and PECS consistently and creatively to support both expressive and receptive language.

  • Collaborate with families, SENCOs, therapists, and multi-agency professionals to ensure a holistic support plan.

  • Incorporate sensory, visual, and kinaesthetic strategies to meet individual learning styles.

  • Work towards EHCP-led outcomes such as communication, emotional regulation, life skills, and social development.

  • Provide nurturing support that builds trust, safety, and emotional wellbeing.

  • Keep clear, professional records of student progress and session outcomes.

  • Champion inclusion, safeguarding, and dignity at all times.

What We’re Looking For

  • Proficiency in Makaton (Level 2 or above preferred) and experience embedding it into learning.

  • Teaching qualification (QTS, QTLS, HLTA), or significant experience in a tutoring or SEND support role.

  • Deep understanding of ASD, SLD, SEMH, sensory profiles, and the impact of trauma or attachment needs.

  • Experience working 1:1 or in small groups, especially in non-traditional or alternative learning environments.

  • Adaptable, creative, and emotionally intelligent—you thrive in a flexible and child-centred approach.

  • Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply).

  • Own transport preferred, but not essential.
