SEND Learning Support Assistant
Location: Walthamstow, E17
Salary: Starting daily rate of £95.83 per day (Pay review at 12 weeks)
Start Date: ASAP (Subject to DBS and clearance)
Assignment Details
- Full-time role, Monday to Friday (Term Time Only)
- Working hours: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM (1 hour break)
- Long-term role for the full academic year
- Supporting children with SEND (ASD and complex needs) in a mainstream primary setting
- Providing 1:1 or small group support depending on need

About the Role
Connex Education is working on behalf of a large and inclusive mainstream primary school in Waltham Forest to recruit a SEND Learning Support Assistant (LSA).
This role involves working closely with children in KS1 and across the primary setting who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and complex needs. You will provide tailored support to help pupils access the curriculum, regulate their emotions, develop communication skills, and engage in learning and social activities.
You will also play a vital role in supporting pupils with personal care, including toileting and feeding where necessary. The successful candidate will need to be proactive, patient, and resilient, with the ability to use de-escalation strategies when managing challenging behaviour.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide in-class support for pupils with ASD and complex needs, both 1:1 and in small groups
- Support access to learning through structured routines, visuals, and personalised strategies
- Assist with communication development, using tools such as PECS, Makaton, or visual timetables
- Encourage positive social interaction and emotional regulation
- Use de-escalation techniques to manage challenging behaviour safely and effectively
- Support with toileting, feeding, and personal care needs when required
- Work closely with the class teacher and SENCO to deliver individualised support plans and EHCP targets
- Contribute to daily observations and progress reports to inform reviews and planning
Person Specification
- Experience working with children with SEND, particularly ASD and complex needs
- Confidence and resilience in managing challenging behaviour and applying de-escalation techniques
- Willingness and ability to support children with toileting and feeding needs
- A calm, patient, and empathetic approach to supporting learning and behaviour
- Strong teamwork skills and ability to collaborate with teachers, SENCO, and parents
- A current DBS on the update service or willingness to apply for one through Connex
