About the Role
Connex Education is working in partnership with a welcoming and inclusive mainstream primary school in Waltham Forest (E17) to recruit an experienced Learning Support Assistant (LSA) to support a group of Year 1 pupils with SEND. One pupil within the group presents with complex needs and requires consistent, structured support, including strategies to manage challenging behaviour. This role is ideal for a confident, resilient individual with a calm and nurturing approach, who can build strong relationships and maintain clear boundaries while promoting positive behaviour and inclusion.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide structured support to a small group of Year 1 pupils with SEND, working within the classroom and during interventions.
- Deliver tailored support for a pupil with complex needs, including managing and de-escalating challenging behaviour.
- Support pupils to access the curriculum through adapted tasks, visuals, modelling, and hands-on resources.
- Implement behaviour support plans and use positive behaviour management strategies consistently.
- Support emotional regulation, routines, and transitions throughout the school day.
- Implement strategies recommended by the SENCO, EHCPs, and external professionals.
- Use communication aids such as visuals, PECs, Makaton, or sensory supports where appropriate.
- Encourage independence, social interaction, and positive peer relationships.
- Work closely with the class teacher and SENCO to review progress and adapt support.
- Record observations and provide feedback on pupils’ progress, behaviour, and engagement.
Person Specification
- Good standard of literacy and numeracy (GCSE English & Maths or equivalent).
- Proven experience working with children (essential).
- Experience supporting pupils with SEND, including complex needs (highly desirable).
- Confident managing challenging behaviour using positive behaviour support strategies.
- Calm, patient, resilient, and able to remain consistent under pressure.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practice, de-escalation strategies, or behaviour support plans is advantageous.
- A current DBS on the update service or willingness to apply through Connex Education.
