Specialist SEND Teaching Assistant

Location: Spilsby
Pay: Up to £525 per week, dependent on experience
Hours: Part Time and Full time hours available
Contract: Day-to-day with long-term opportunities

About the Role

Connex Education are recruiting for a compassionate, dedicated and proactive Specialist SEN Teaching Assistant. This role involves supporting secondary and further education pupils with a range of complex special educational needs and disabilities, including autism, severe and profound learning difficulties, and complex medical needs, helping them to access a personalised curriculum while developing the skills and confidence needed for adulthood. Working closely with experienced teachers, therapists and healthcare professionals, you will provide both educational and practical support throughout the school day. The successful candidate will be calm, resilient and adaptable, with the confidence to support pupils with their learning, communication, personal care and medical needs while building positive, trusting relationships with pupils, families and colleagues. This role is based within the school’s secondary and further education provision, supporting students across Key Stage 3 through to Further Education in a nurturing, highly specialised learning environment where communication, independence and preparation for adulthood are at the heart of everything they do.

Role Responsibilities

  • Support pupils across Key Stage 3 through to Further Education with a range of complex special educational needs, disabilities and medical needs.
  • Provide one-to-one and small group support, adapting your approach to meet each pupil’s individual learning, communication, independence and preparation for adulthood goals.
  • Work alongside teachers, therapists and healthcare professionals to deliver personalised learning, therapeutic activities and life skills programmes.
  • Support pupils with personal care, moving and handling, and clinical interventions in line with their individual healthcare plans and school policies.
  • Promote pupils’ communication, independence, social interaction and emotional wellbeing throughout the school day.
  • Assist in creating a safe, engaging and inclusive learning environment where every pupil can thrive.
  • Support pupils to develop functional life skills, access community-based learning and participate in enrichment opportunities where appropriate.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils, families and colleagues, contributing to a collaborative multidisciplinary team.

About the School

The School is a highly regarded specialist setting, supporting children and young people aged 2–19 with a wide range of complex special educational needs and disabilities, including autism, severe and profound learning difficulties, and complex medical needs. The role is based within the school’s secondary and further education provision, supporting pupils across Key Stage 3 through to Further Education. The school provides a nurturing, inclusive environment where every pupil is encouraged to develop their communication, independence and confidence through personalised learning. Staff work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, healthcare professionals and families to ensure every young person receives the support they need to thrive both in education and as they prepare for adult life.

Person Specification

To be considered for this role, you must be able to demonstrate:

  • A Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification, or exceptional relevant experience working as a Teaching Assistant.
  • A minimum of two terms’ experience working as a Teaching Assistant within a British curriculum school.
  • A current Enhanced DBS certificate (or willingness to obtain one).
  • The ability to successfully complete the Connex Education onboarding process.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with both pupils and colleagues.
  • A genuine passion for supporting children and young people.
  • Two school-based professional references.

Essential Skills

Practical competency and training in:

  • Tracheostomy care (theory and practical)
  • Moving and Handling (theory and practical)
  • Jejunostomy pump
  • Gastrostomy button (PEG/Button)
  • Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS)
