Tell us a bit about yourself?
“My name is Jeanette and I tutor pupils who are working at primary school level, often older pupils who are working behind age related expectations. After working as a teacher and SENCO in a large primary school in a deprived area of West Yorkshire, I took early retirement in 2021. There were a growing number of pupils out of education in the authority in which I worked and I decided that I would like to use the knowledge and skills I have developed to help them. I discovered tutoring and have supported a number of pupils over the past 4 years.“
Jeanette’s commitment to her students has been recognised with the Professional Tutor Quality Mark, which is designed to highlight those colleagues who demonstrate the highest standard of practice and show dedication to their pupils and schools.
Why does tutoring with Connex suit you?
What are the best parts of your job as a tutor?
The best part of tutoring for me is when my pupils develop confidence in their own abilities and realise what they are capable of, both academically and socially. I find it very rewarding when a pupil I have supported is successfully integrated into an appropriate provision for them.
What are the young people you tutor like? How are you positively impacting them?
I am currently supporting two pupils, a 14 year old girl who is working at reception level and a boy who is also 14 and is working closer to age related expectations. The girl has made amazing progress since I began working with her in September, particularly in her literacy skills. She has gone from not recognising any letters to the early stages of sentence reading. She will now play meaningfully with toys. Initially when given construction resources, she would repeatedly build and knock down a few bricks. She now loves playing with magnetic tiles and will build houses etc. She has become increasingly pro-social and enjoys turn taking activities.
The boy has worked hard to ‘plug gaps’ in his knowledge, particularly relating to maths, spelling and punctuation. He has gone from being a reluctant reader to enjoying reading books, particularly the Alex Rider series. He has developed confidence in his abilities and learned to accept that it’s okay to make mistakes. He has recently been allocated a place in a provision that is appropriate to his needs and I am sure he will thrive.
