Time worked with Connex: 2 Years
Tell us a bit about yourself?

“My name’s Judy, and I teach English ( some Key Stage 3 and mainly Key Stage 4 ). I’ve worked in mainstream education for 25 years, then in hospitals and at an Alternative Provision. I decided to concentrate on 1:1 tutoring as I felt that this was my strength. It also enables me to work from home and to have flexible working hours.”
Judy’s commitment to her students has been recognised with the Professional Tutor Quality Mark, this is designed to highlight those colleagues who demonstrate the highest standard of practice and show dedication to their pupils and schools.
Why does tutoring with Connex suit you?
Tutoring with Connex suits me, as my line manager is aware of my strengths and areas of experience, and tailors work assignments accordingly. I am able to say when I can and cannot work. If there are any problems with any of the assignments, my line manager is on hand to discuss these and resolve any issues.
What are the best parts of your job as a tutor?
The best part of my job is tutoring the students themselves and building a strong working relationship with them. Through 1:1 teaching, the sessions provide students with an opportunity to be free from anxiety and the distractions they may experience in a larger group or classroom setting. I feel that I have the opportunity to help them achieve far more than they believed they could, and this is extremely rewarding.
““I feel that I have the opportunity to help them achieve far more than they believed they could.””
What are the young people you tutor like? How are you positively impacting them?
One student I’m currently teaching does not use her camera or microphone, as she suffers from extreme social anxiety. I’m able to have a two-way conversation with her via the chat box, and she can show me her work by writing directly onto the documents on screen.
Another student I work with struggles with self-belief and has missed at least two years of school. Bit by bit, I feel I am increasing his confidence by adapting my daily lesson plans to engage him and by working in ‘bite-sized chunks’ aligned with his ability. He knows that there is ‘never a silly question’, and he is beginning to feel comfortable asking questions about the work we’re covering, without fear of reprimand or embarrassment.
What does being awarded the Professional Tutor Quality Mark from Connex Tutors mean to you?
It means a great deal to me as I feel that my hard work and commitment to my students is recognised and appreciated.
Would you recommend tutoring and Connex Tutors to others?

Finally, I endeavour to make sure students feel understood, valued and appreciated. Connex staff make us feel that what we are doing is worthwhile and that we are making a positive impact
