Name: Sue

Job Title: SEND Tutor

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I am a home tutor for SEND pupils who have struggled to cope in LA provisions or are awaiting a place in an appropriate setting. After a long career as a primary school teacher, I decided to leave class teaching and work in a support role which led me onto the path of SEND education. At the same time, I studied for a professional qualification awarded by Leeds Beckett Uni, in Therapeutic Play.

Sue’s commitment to her students has been recognised with the Professional Tutor Quality Mark, which is designed to highlight those colleagues who demonstrate the highest standard of practice and show dedication to their pupils and schools.

Why does tutoring with Connex suit you?

Being a SEND tutor is a perfect fit for my skill set, blending my primary teaching practice (hands on, creative, cross-curricular) with a therapeutic approach.

Tutoring with Connex gives me the flexibility to choose how many hours I want to work and therefore fulfils a good work/life balance.

What are the best parts of your job as a tutor?

The best part of the job is getting to know the children and their families really well so I can deliver personalised learning which engages and motivates them.

I have worked with a huge variety of children. A common theme is autistic/ADHD children who have had very negative experiences of school due to their needs not being met.

What are the young people you tutor like? How are you positively impacting them?

Depending on the profile of each child the impact I have varies (and cannot always be neatly measured). My initial impact is successfully building a trusting relationship with them which is the foundation for introducing them to new skills and knowledge. I love tutoring because of the huge variety of children and families I get to meet.  It’s really rewarding to provide some kind of structure and focus for them after they have experienced a long time of feeling adrift.

What does being awarded the Professional Tutor Quality Mark from Connex Tutors mean to you?

Receiving the Quality Assurance Mark is important. Tutoring, by its nature, is an isolating role so being able to share practices, ask for advice and receive feedback is vital.

Would you recommend tutoring and Connex Tutors to others?

I definitely recommend Connex to anyone else thinking about becoming a tutor. They have an expansive online tutor platform for CPD training, respond promptly to communications and are proactive in improving the service they offer.
