About the Role
Connex Education Partnership is looking for resilient, empathetic and enthusiastic SEMH Learning Support Assistants to work across schools, specialist education settings and alternative provisions in Calne and the surrounding areas.
This is an excellent opportunity for experienced Learning Support Assistants, Teaching Assistants, Behaviour Support Assistants, Youth Workers, Mentors and Support Workers who are passionate about helping children and young people overcome barriers to learning.
You will support pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them develop confidence, positive relationships and the skills they need to engage successfully with education.
Your Responsibilities
As an SEMH Learning Support Assistant, you may be responsible for:
- Providing 1:1 and small-group support
- Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils
- Supporting emotional regulation and wellbeing
- Encouraging positive behaviour and engagement
- Helping pupils manage challenging situations
- Supporting pupils to access learning and classroom activities
- Developing confidence, independence and resilience
- Using appropriate behaviour and de-escalation strategies
- Supporting pupils with social and communication needs
- Working closely with teachers, pastoral teams and specialist staff
- Following individual support, behaviour and care plans
- Creating a calm, safe and inclusive learning environment
The Pupils
You may support children and young people experiencing:
- SEMH needs
- Behavioural difficulties
- Emotional regulation difficulties
- Anxiety and low confidence
- Attachment and trauma-related needs
- ADHD and associated needs
- Social and communication difficulties
- Difficulties engaging with education
- Challenging or distressed behaviour
- Additional or complex SEND needs
You won’t be expected to support every type of need. Connex will work with you to identify placements that suit your experience and strengths.
Who Are We Looking For?
We’d love to hear from candidates with:
- Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH or behavioural needs
- Learning Support Assistant or Teaching Assistant experience
- Experience working with vulnerable young people
- A background in education, youth work, care, mentoring, coaching or support work
- Experience with behaviour support or emotional regulation
- A calm, patient and consistent approach
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- The resilience and empathy required to support pupils who may find education challenging
Experience in education is desirable, but relevant experience outside of education is also highly valued.
Team-Teach, MAPA, de-escalation or other positive behaviour training would be welcomed.
